The Regional Conference for Pacific Women in Maritime held in Nuku’alofa, Tonga, from 11-15 April 2016 was attended by representatives from fourteen Pacific Island countries (PICTs), which also saw the PacWIMA re-launched.

The Conference recognized the benefits and importance for Pacific Island communities in achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, especially the relevance and pivotal role of the maritime sector to the economies of PICTs.

The Conference expressed its desire to make a tangible contribution towards the fulfilment of SDG 5, with the adoption of 8 resolutions which included the promotion and establishment of State WIMA’s to enable recognition and sustainability of women in the Pacific maritime sector.In this regard, PacWIMA developed the State WIMA template, Work Plan template and continuously provide guidance to Members to formally establish the State Women In Maritime Association.
